One for each day of the week.
1. Avocados! They’re green, they look like nubbly pears, they taste really good mixed with cream cheese and salsa- how could they get better? THEY CAN: they grow on trees. Seriously.
2. Gnocchi. They’re simple to make, satisfying to eat, and look like little pillows. Your hands get all potatoey and floury when you make them, and that, my friends, is the sign of a good recipe.
3. Bread with seeds and other surprises inside. I like eating bread and suddenly discovering a sunflower seed, or flax seeds. It’s an adventure in every bite! Also, it’s really good with a nice soft camembert. Better than white bread!
4. Butter. If this list were in any kind of order, butter would be king. Let’s all take a moment to think on the many delights of butter… Now don’t you wish you had some to eat right now? I know I do.
5. Sweet potatoes. They grow UNDER the earth. That’s almost enough explanation right there- but there’s more to them than that. They’re like potatoes, but sweet. And orange. They taste good with butter. Need I say more? I think not- but I will. They also taste good with molasses, apples, pecans, pineapple, pumpkin, and I’m making myself hungry. Mmm… sweet potatoes…
6. Milk. I’ve never especially loved the taste of milk. It took me a while to get used to drinking it, but I worked at it anyway because it’s just so good. I speak of the real stuff, of course. The milk that you have to buy from the farmer, that comes with the cream still in it. In the summer, there’s almost as much cream as there is milk. It’s an intensely satiating drink.
7. Crêpes. They’re good sweet, but they’re even better savory. A crêpe filled with ham and cheese, hot and melty, makes for a great dinner. Throw in a bottle of hard cider and I can’t resist.
oh i’m so glad you said butter! i love butter! and noone was ever able to understand my love. i mean, there is nothing better than yummy bread with a lot of butter .. and honey for example! i used to trade my cheese and ham for butter on school camps to put more on my bread … good times ;) ow yeah I forgot to say HI! :) like your blog a lot!
Thanks for stopping by and commenting! I’m always glad to meet a fellow lover of butter. :)
I feel that something key is missing… something beautiful… natures candy…
I am of course talking about BACON!
How could you forget bacon? :’(
(The sad face stole the apostrophe that should have been in “nature’s”…)
I know, Norman, I know… I couldn’t include everything, though, and bacon just didn’t come to mind in time to make the list.
sadface.
What a lovely list! Since we’re electing things that should be on the list but aren’t, I would like to mention Greek yogurt. It’s a newly-discovered passion of mine. Thanks, midwives!
cheese is not on your list. This is a glaring problem. Mentioning it as an aside under the heading “bread” is an insult. I can overlook it because you love butter the way you do. I bought butter today- 1.39 for a lb. Not too shabby!
Jessie and Jolly- thanks for adding things to the list! I guess next time I’ll have to make it a list of one food for each day of the month. I don’t seem to have enough spots for all of the foods that should be listed! :)
I really miss cheddar, by the way. And monterey jack, too. France has some great soft cheeses and really good goat cheese, but the only hard cheese my family eats is swiss. Not at all my preferred cheese.
We were in Tulsa this weekend and found a gem of a restaurant!
They had Real Butter! And not store-bought, but homemade butter. They whip up the cream and salt each morning and spoon it into little paper cups. It was divine. :)
Whoa. That’s amazing! I’ve never heard of a restaurant doing that. Was the rest of the food good? We might have to take a road trip sometime in June…
