I don’t have my labor contract yet, and I probably can’t go to Houston this week to get my visa. That means more waiting, and more patience.
We’ve talked a good bit about contentment at my house. My dad likes to bring up the subject from time to time, always asking, “What does it mean to be content in all circumstances?” When I think along these lines, I always come back to two things: gratitude and disappointment. Our family’s conclusion is that disappointment does not mean discontent. My further conclusion is that gratitude is foundational to contentment and that disappointment is only allowed to be a temporary window-dressing, so to speak.
That said, I’m not sure what to call my current slightly-paradoxical state of mind. Grateful disappointment? Doesn’t sound quite right. Disappointedly grateful? I need help, grammar people. What would you call it?
Sounds like you are very indifferent. Like Mr Woodhouse was when he found out that Harriet had been accosted by gypsies but Frank Churchill came by and rescued her and Mr Knightley kicked them out of the neighborhood, making everything safe again.
Are you already publishing on France time? Your post is dated 2 October, though it’s only nine in the evening of the First where I am.
I’m not indifferent. Just trying to strike a balance between disappointment and gratitude. And trust, I suppose. I do not want to wait any longer to go. I feel very impatient. But I can’t do anything but wait!
I’m not sure what’s up with the timestamp. I think I did it wrong, and now I have to figure out how to fix it!
Really I was joking — I don’t really compare you to Mr Woodhouse!
But I can never decide if that usage means something more like “undifferentiated” — a mixture of different feelings, or if it’s a polite way of saying “I’m feeling bad but trying to put a good face on it.” If it’s the former then that works for your situation, but I’m inclined to think it’s the latter. So I wasn’t being serious.
Hope y’all have a safe trip Sunday and Monday!
Oh, good! I was a little bit confused… :)
